The situation was worse outside of Edmonton. Some of the areas of the province were expected to be hit by 5-10 centimetres of snow.

Many people living west of Stony Plain experienced power outages Monday morning. Fortis Alberta says about 790 rural customers were without power between 9:15 a.m. and 10:55 a.m. The company says wet snow was a factor in the outage.

Global News Meteorologist Nicola Crosbie said the mix of snow and rain was the result of a cold front that rolled through the area.

“The rain can drag down cold air from the mid-levels, and that’s what happened Monday,” explained Crosbie.

“Cold air was brought to the surface causing the temperatures to drop from four to zero degrees celsius. This process keeps snow falling all the way to the ground.”

There is good news on the horizon. The temperature is supposed to climb significantly throughout the next several days, reaching a high of 22 on Sunday.
